One day I took special notice of the marks I make on scrap paper after sharpening pencils. (I give the pencils a little flick around the paper to rid the tips of the jaggy nibs that can tear at paper fibers.)

This drawing and several other recent pieces represent an attempt to recreate a few of the scribbles as larger, more deliberate quotations of original spontaneous moments.

At first glance the drawings appear to swiftly retrace the perfect sweep of the original, but close examination reveals the nuances of a labored elaboration.
